Interview with Israel’s Ambassador to Germany

On May 17th of 2021, Nicole interviewed Israel’s Ambassador to Germany, Jeremy Issacharoff, on DW News.

At the date of the talk, fighting between the Israeli Defense Forces and Hamas had left around 200 dead, most of them civilians in the Gaza Strip.

While the international community was calling on the warring parties to negotiate a ceasefire, Israel’s Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu, insisted the fighting would continue “at full force” until “calm” was restored.

According to Issacharoff, high-level discussions to de-escalate were ongoing between Israeli officials, the United States, and Germany’s foreign minister, Heiko Maas, who was also speaking to Qatar and Egypt.

The ambassador said he was concerned about a flare-up in sectarian violence but believes the vast majority of Jews and Arabs in Israel “will want to reassert their right to live in peace and in coexistence.”

He rejected accusations of Israel’s operation in Gaza to be disproportionate.
